|Jason Burkett – President
Jason is a Financial Advisor with UBS in the Fort Collins, Colorado office. He was born and raised in Fort Collins, CO and is a graduate of Poudre High School and Colorado State University, majoring in Math with an actuarial science concentration. Jason worked as an Actuary in Chicago and Denver before moving back to Fort Collins in 2004 to raise his 3 boys, Triston, Llayon and Brady in wonderful Northern Colorado. Jason and his wife Julie love being part of the Fort Collins community. They enjoy spending time together and try to take advantage of all that Colorado has to offer; including hiking, camping, biking, and skiing. Jason also loves sports and enjoys coaching his son’s sports teams including youth football, soccer and track.
|Shawn Sullivan – Vice President
Shawn attended a number of CHAMP breakfasts before becoming a board member, the focus of integrity in sports resonated with him. Shawn has lived in Fort Collins since 2004 and during that time he was co-founder of Northern Colorado Active 20/30, an organization benefiting more than 25 child-based charities in Northern Colorado. In addition, Shawn is a past board member of Partners Mentoring Youth and the Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce. He met his wife Julie playing co-ed soccer in Denver and they have three daughters that are very active in sports, including swimming, gymnastics, and soccer. Outside of work he likes to mountain bike, snowboard, and hike.Shawn works for The Neenan Company, focusing on developing commercial markets and has re-invigorated the firm’s role as design-builder for craft breweries. In 2013, Shawn returned to The Neenan Company after nine years serving in related roles within the contracting industry. Since 1996, Shawn has worked in a variety of market sectors primarily focusing on commercial, manufacturing, and craft breweries.
|Erik Hegstad – Treasurer
Erik Hegstad has lived in the northern Colorado area his entire life. After graduating from Northridge High School in Greeley, Erik played baseball at Seward County CC where he was named an Honorable Mention All-American his sophomore year. He then transferred to the University of Northern Colorado to continue his baseball career as an outfielder. Erik graduated with a degree in accounting from UNC and has spent the last four years a CPA. He is currently a CPA with Brock and Company, CPAs, P.C. in Fort Collins. Erik enjoys golfing, running, working out and spending time with his four dogs. He has always had a passion for athletics and believes that the benefits that sports provide go far beyond the playing field. Erik joined the CHAMP board in 2015 after attending a CHAMP breakfast.
|Matt Beck – Board Member
Matt Beck came to Fort Collins in 1992. After leaving a baseball scholarship at another school to attend CSU and play baseball, the program was discontinued that same year. Fort Collins felt like home and he stayed to graduate with a B.S. in Biological Science and also an M.B.A. in Finance & Accounting. After graduation, he married his wife Joliann, and today they have two children – Stone and Josianne. Matt is a Banker at Bank of Colorado. Outside of work, he enjoys time with his family, mountain biking, cycling, skiing, camping, and coaching baseball. Matt has coached in the Fort Collins Baseball Club since 2006. Matt’s coaching and his team’s ideals were recognized in 2010 when the Fort Collins Titans were named “CHAMP Elite Team Champions.” After realizing that he and CHAMP shared many of the same beliefs and philosophies, he became more involved with the organization and was invited to be CHAMP’s Treasurer in 2011. Matt is proud to be a member of the CHAMP team.
|Joshua Guernsey – Board Member
Josh is a Fort Collins native and a 1997 graduate from Fort Collins High School. Josh earned a bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Colorado and a dual master’s degree in Real Estate Finance and Construction Management at the University of Denver. He is now a Partner with Brinkman Partners where he manages the firms commercial real estate brokerage team, and leads the company’s investment and acquisition activities. Josh and his wife Jen have a very active family, enjoying skiing, hiking and anything outdoors. Josh joined the Champ Board in 2014 largely because of his two young boys (Cole and Graham) who are just now being introduced to athletics. As a father and coach, Josh hopes to provide them with the same character building opportunities and experiences in athletics that he experienced as a youth.
|Stephanie Klaviter – Board Member
Stephanie has lived in Fort Collins since 2000 and works for Triple Crown Sports. She is the director of the world’s largest youth Fastpitch tournament which brings over 30,000 people each summer to Colorado. Stephanie grew up in Minnesota and attended the U of Minnesota where she became one of the most decorated pitchers in program history. In 2003 Stephanie was inducted into the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame and was named to the U of MN All 25th Anniversary Team. After college Stephanie played 3 years in the Women’s Professional Softball League. In 2000 she was named MVP and Pitcher of the Year as she led her team to a National Championship. For the past 7 years Stephanie has been the head coach of the nationally ranked Triple Crown Stars club softball team. The program has sent over 200 players on to play college softball. She serves as the organizations coaches coordinator mentoring former players who want to coach. Stephanie has garnered countless awards and honor throughout her playing career none however comparing to the rewards she receives from coaching today’s youth.
|Thomas López – Board Member
Tom is a Fort Collins native and a 1971 graduate of Poudre High School. Tom earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Colorado and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Northern Colorado. Tom retired from Poudre School District after 36 years, serving as a teacher, coach, Assistant Principal, and Principal. From August 2003 to May 2013, Tom served as the Principal of Rocky Mountain High School. Tom’s coaching experience centered upon boy’s wrestling, girl’s softball, and youth baseball. Tom and his wife Cathi raised their son Matt and daughter Katy in Fort Collins through the schools of Poudre School District. The López family participated in the fine soccer, tennis, baseball, and handball programs found in Northern Colorado. Tom has earned many professional honors, some of which include the recipient of the: CHAMP Foundation Keli McGregor Servant Leadership Award; Colorado Wrestling Officials Association Hall of Fame; PSD Teacher Foundation Award; PSD Mary Hull Collaborative Award; and lastly the statewide Colorado Award winner in Science for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. Tom loves all sports and considers character a priority in athletics, and especially life. As a CHAMP Board Member, Tom is excited to help the community of Northern Colorado develop positive living attitudes and strategies which put health and welfare at the forefront.
|Matt Phillips – Board Member
Matt Phillips has lived in Fort Collins since 1990. Matt graduated with a business finance degree and then a MBA from Colorado State University. At CSU Matt played football for Sonny Lubick and was an Academic All-Conference Wide Receiver. Matt is currently an independent Financial Advisor doing business as Phillips Financial. Matt is married to Eileen, another former CSU athlete. They have two sons, Marcus and Julius. In his spare time Matt enjoys working out, running, and playing with the kids. He is active in Northern Colorado Active 20/30 and is a member of the CSU Ram Alumni Athletes Association. Matt joined CHAMP in 2008 after attending the first CHAMP breakfast. |Matt Vesgaard – Board Member
Matt is the Chief Credit Officer at Verus Bank of Commerce in Fort Collins and has been in banking for over 15 years in various roles. Matt is a graduate of Rocky Mountain High School and earned his undergraduate degree and MBA from Colorado State University. Matt played baseball in junior college and was a member of a local competitive travel team for several years; he has coached baseball, football and basketball through various programs in Fort Collins. Matt and his wife Heather have two boys, Brenden and Cameron and a daughter, Rylee. Matt and Heather enjoy spending time with family, being outdoors, mountain biking, hiking, running, racquetball and being involved in the community. Matt joined the CHAMP team in 2016.
|Korin LaPlante – CHAMP Coordinator
Korin is a California native from the Bay Area and a graduate from San Diego State University where she earned a BA in Public Administration in 1995. Her background is in fundraising, board management, and event planning working for SDSU, PRA Destination Management, and Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort in Avila Beach. In 2004, she and her husband Mike moved to Ft. Collins after he accepted a job at Colorado State University. Korin spent the next 11 years volunteering on the committee level for her church and kid’s schools. She and Mike along with their kids Will, Georgia, and Griffin, are all very active and busy, taking advantage of all the outdoor activities Colorado has to offer while juggling their demanding schedules. Korin looks forward to assisting the CHAMP Board of Directors in promoting character based performance in local schools and club organizations.
